We just got this sent to use: How we “freelance/independent contractors” get treated..

We just noticed Hurley has joined on the e-commerce side of things just like Roxy, and Quiksilver. We shall see if the other big 2 will follow ( Billabong, Volcom ). For those who don’t understand surf companies are now selling there product direct to the consumer in which they are cutting out the middle man (surf shops) per say. So if it cost a company $2.00 to make a shirt and they turn around and sell it on there own site for $25.00 that’s a big profit, compared to selling it to the surf shop (wholesale) for $12.50. You have to see both sides of the fence here, yeah the surf shops have to be peed off, but it’s only smart (we guess) for the companies to sell direct now with the technology to do so… Let us know if you know of any other brands are doing the same thing…

Have a look: Kelly Slater (takes a few seconds to load)

“Only a Surfer Knows the Feeling” – Billabong It’s so true. I guess you can say this goes for any sport you do. Only a surfer know the feeling of getting that long tube, doing a huge air and landing perfectly, getting the longest ride of there life, etc.
“Men Who Ride Mountains” – Quiksilver Being out in the water at say 30ft Mavericks or Waimea Bay, a set rolls in, he turns and paddles, his heart is beating a million miles an hour, he catches the wave staring down the face of a 30ft “mountain”, knowing this could be the best or last wave of his life.
“Nobody Knows, Nobody Cares” – Lost I think I remember reading years ago, a thing on Rob Machado where he was talking about being on tour, and he could win an event and come home to see his friends (who work 9-5 type friends) and they wouldn’t even know if he won or lost. It’s crazy how and when your on the tour, its a really small group of people (surfers, photogs, judges, and a few others) traveling together to one location for about 2 weeks. Your like a family for that time period. You come home and everything’s still the same. You were gone for two weeks and maybe even won the contest or made it to the finals (in which is a vicory in it’s own) and without sounding bitter we kind of agree with the phrase “Nobody Knows, Nobody Cares”. =(

Pro surfer’s have it so tuff. They get paid to fly around the world to surf the best surfing spots there is on there sponsor’s dime. You arrive and find there are no waves! For a surfer this is just like a fish out of water, what do you do??? Car Surf!!! This is Sterling Spencer “surfing”, Johny Craft at the wheel, and Grainger Larsen as the co-pilot.carsurfing

We were stoked to see in the new Transworld Surf and Surfer magazine, our image of Joel Tudor hanging ten in Cardiff, California. The image was taken by Jack English. Tudor is off this week to catch a south swell in Mexico, we wish him luck on surf and safety…sectorninejoeltudor

Hurley has signed on as the title sponsor to the world’s largest professional surfing competition, the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing. This year there bringing on a “hang 10″ longboard contest. Which will include surfing greats Joel Tudor, Herbie Fletcher, Alex Knost, CJ Nelon among others. Should be an exciting event, let’s just hope we get some waves…

While were on the subject of Energy Drinks/Commercials, here is one of pro surfer Ian Walsh by Red Bull. The only thing we didn’t like about this, is the way they edited it where he is getting spit out of the tube and they cut to another frame, where it leaves you asking, “did he not come out?” They should have just kept it playing.. But none the less SICK, to see surfing in these commercials… Click here to watch.

We were just kicking back enjoying our weekend watching tv and all of a sudden an AMP Energy drink commerical comes on with our good buddy Garrett McNamara. Here it is: G-Mac’s AMP Commercial.

We hear this a lot. First and foremost you need the right board. No, there not the “cool” looking surfboards (fiberglass boards) you see everyone else using. You have to work your way up to one of those. It’s really like you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. To make learning quick and fun you MUST learn on a board such as these. Why, because there very long in length and for that alone will make paddling much easier along with catching the waves. Second, go where it’s a “learners” wave. A learners wave is usually a beach-break where there are lifeguard-stands. Check out the tide charts and try to surf during “high-tide”. Last if you can afford it, try going through a surf school such as Surf Diva. They are located in La Jolla. If you do all of this we can almost guarantee you will stand up and be surfing! As you get better and better, then that is when you get a smaller surfboard. Good luck, and have fun!

Today’s common trophy isn’t the typical plastic piece you go home and place on your mantel to collect dust. Now a days its a jet-ski. More and more surf contest are giving these away as first place trophies. Along with winning $10,000 this past mother’s day weekend, pro surfer Nate Tyler also won this brand new Kawasaki Jet-Ski presented by Monster Energy. Nate lives up in Templeton, Ca. so there is plenty of places from the lakes to the ocean where he will be able to ride. Good on you Nate!

Yesterday we got the chance to meet up in Newport Beach, California and shoot with two of our favorite surfer bro’s, Alex Knost and Scotty Stopnik. The waves were bad (the wind was side-shore), but we made the most of it and shot anyways!

Recently we had the opportunity to having a “business” meeting in Laguna Beach, California with top pro surfers Timmy Curran and Mike Losness. What do surfers talk about at times like this? Mostly what surfer got signed, got dropped, what surfer is making what, a little “I heard this about so and so”, photo/video talk, who scored where, and just catching up on things… Nothing amazing, just your average surf talk. Right after it was back in the water to do what they do best!timmycurran
